Free Indexes on the Web:

There are a number of  indexes on the Internet that can be searched at no cost. The indexer may, however, charge anywhere from $1.95 to $15 or more for the full text of the articles. Free copies of nearly all of these articles can be requested from your nearest public library on interlibrary loan.

  • Agricola - The National Agricultural Library provides citations to articles, reports, reprints, and chapters from books about agriculture.

  • Entrez-PubMed (Medline) - The National Library of Medicine provides access to over 11 million citations in medical journals.


  • ERIC - The U.S. Department of Education indexes journal articles and other publications concerned with teaching and learning. Almost all of the articles and documents can be requested on interlibrary loan.

  • FindArticles.com - LookSmart provides this index to over 300 magazines and journals about the arts and entertainment, cars and other vehicles, business and finance, computers and technology, health and fitness, home and family, news and society, education, and sports. Most of the articles are in full-text and can be printed, free, from this site.

  • MNMag: Minnesota Magazine Index - The Minneapolis Public Library indexes these nine Minnesota publications: City Pages (1/91-present), Hennepin History (Spring '91-present), Minneapolis and St. Paul Skyway News (1/93-present), Mpls. St. Paul Magazine (1/91-present), Minnesota History (Spring '91-present) Minnesota Monthly (1/93-present), Minnesota Law and Politics (4/90-present), Ramsey County History (Spring '91-present), and Twin Cities Reader (1/91-3/97).

  • Northern Light Power Search - Indexes approximately 5,400 magazines, newspapers, journals, and other publications.

  • PubSCIENCE - Indexes articles from over 1,000 scientific and technical journals.

  • UnCover Web - Provides citations to thousands of scholarly journals.

WebPALS Databases:

Traverse des Sioux library card holders can search the following indexes from library, home, or office using the WebPALS Catalog. Many of the magazine articles indexed are available online in full-text.

  • General Magazines (GEN) - General Magazines indexes articles from over 1,500 magazines and journals from the 80's onward - many are in full text (an asterisk * indicates those in full text). Either the whole database or one of its three parts can be searched.
    • Magazine Index - mainly articles from popular magazines
    • Expanded Academic Index - mostly articles from scholarly or academic journals
    • New York Times Index (NYT)
  • Business Magazines (BUS) -  Business Magazines indexes articles from more than 800 business magazines and journals from 1985 onward.
    • Business Index includes many articles, in full text. Those in full text are indicated with an * asterisk.
    • Wall Street Journal Index (WSJ) can be searched separately. It does not have any full text articles.

  • Computer Index - indexes articles from 150 consumer and computer industry publications.
  • Health Index (HEA) - Indexes articles from over 205 medical journals and consumer health magazines, plus selected articles on health, medicine, and nutrition from 1,500 general magazines published from 1994 onward. The full text of 500 pamphlets, and of articles about health from newspapers and newsletters, are also included in this index.
Three other helpful databases that are available to Traverse des Sioux library card holders are:
  • Company Profiles (COP) - Provides brief information about more than 172,000 U.S. public and private businesses.
  • Books In Print (BIP) - Listings by author, title, keywords, and ISBN of books currently, or soon to be, available for purchase in the U.S.

  • MULS, a Union List of Serials (MUL) - Indicates which libraries in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota subscribe to a magazine, newspaper, journal, or other daily, weekly, monthly, or annual serial publication (e.g.. World Almanac and Book of Facts).


MnLINK Databases:

The Minnesota Legislature appropriates funds for MINITEX, a publicly supported network of over 200 academic, public, state agency, and special libraries, and for the Library Development Service of the Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning, to make a variety of electronic databases available to all Minnesotans as the Electronic Library of Minnesota. South-central Minnesotans can search these databases at libraries or from home, school, or office. Just enter your library card barcode and last name (password) in MnLINK's patron authentication form!

The Electronic Library of Minnesota also contracts with database vendors to make the databases listed above, extensions to them, and additional databases, searchable from Minnesota schools, public libraries, academic libraries and state agency libraries, through direct links to the databases from library web pages. With a password, these databases can also be searched at home. These databases include:
  • General Reference Center and Expanded Academic ASAP - Indexes articles from 2,045 general interest and business magazines and journals (with 1200 in full text) and 2,600 academic journals (with 1400 in full text). The General Reference Center includes the full text for the past 2 years of Knight Ridder newspaper articles, and indexes these newspapers: New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Christian Science Monitor. General Reference Center has the full text of over 15 reference books including Information Please Almanac, Information Please Environmental Almanac, Information Please Sports Almanac,  Encyclopedia of American Facts & Dates, Great Thinkers of the Western World, Harper Encyclopedia of Military Biography, Presidents and Prime Ministers, Readers Companion to American History, Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys, and Rand McNally maps.

  • General Business File ASAP - Indexes 1,300 business, management, and international economics journals, trade and industry publications, and business magazines from 1980 to the present - 650 of the magazine and journal titles are in full text. It also indexes the Wall Street Journal, Asian Wall Street Journal, and the business and finance sections of the New York Times for the past three years.
  • Business & Company Resource Center - Provides 50,000 investment reports, profiles over 100,000 companies, and includes the full text of the past 30 days PR Newswires.

  • Computer Database - Indexes articles for the last 3 years from 150 consumer and industry publications about computers, telecommunications, and electronics. More than two-thirds of the journals are in full text.

  • Health Reference Center Academic - Indexes articles from the current year and the past 4 years from 228 medical journals and consumer health magazines (180 of them in full text), and the full text of 700 pamphlets, articles on health from 1500 general interest magazines, 2,500 overviews from Clinical Reference Systems, and the following reference books: Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Complete Home Medical Guide, Complete Directory for People With Chronic Illness, Consumer Health Information Source Book, Everything You Need To Know About Medical Tests, Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, Mosby's Medical, Nursing & Allied Health Dictionary, PDR Family Guide to Nutrition and Health, and USP DI-Volume II: Advice for the Patient: Drug Information in Lay Language.

  • National Newspapers - Indexes five major newspapers from 1986 onward, and provides full text articles, since 1997, from the Los Angeles Times, Star Tribune, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post, and from the New York Times for the current 90 days.

  • Article1st - Indexes articles from nearly 12,500 journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture from 1990 to the present. None are in full text.

  • Contents1st - Tables of contents for the (almost) 12, 500 journals described above.

  • ECO, Electronic Collections Online - Indexes a large collection of online journals. Full text is available only if your library already subscribes to the journal and has made arrangements to have the articles available online.
  • NetFirst - Search, by keyword, for links to high-quality informational web sites.
  • Union List of Periodicals - Shows which OCLC member libraries have issues of which magazines, newspapers, or journals.

  • WorldCat - Check this database of over 41 million to find out which libraries own a specific title.
