The G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) was organized in 1866 in Illinois. It's membership was limited to Union (Northern) Veterans of the Civil War. It's purpose was to maintain fellowship for the men who fought to preserve the Union and to help widows, orphans, and handicapped veterans. It's motto was "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty". By the 1880's there were over 400,000 members across the United States. This post had over 300 members during it's existence.

This Hall was designed by a member of the Post to resemble a military fort and built in 1885, using brick from the Henry Ames brick yard which was just North of Litchfield. Shortly after the Hall was built, the members deeded it to the Village of Litchfield with the condition that it be kept as a memorial to the Veterans of the Civil War and be opened to the public for reading. This Hall also served as the first public library in Meeker County.

As you step into the meeting room, you will notice the pictures of the post members which line the North wall. The chairs are the same ones which were brought in by the original members in 1885. The large chandelier (originally lit by kerosene) was brought here from Boston in 1885. The altar, which was used during meetings, and the miniture cabin in the corner, were made from wood of the cabin, near Acton, where the first settlers were killed in the Dakota Indian War of 1862.

The large composite picture on the wall near the main room entrance holds the photographs of 99 of the early Post members, and Frank Daggett, for whom the Post was named. Clark Angell, a member of the Post and Meeker County pioneer photographer, donated his services to record the faces of this Post's membership. Frank Daggett was the commander of two all-black heavy artillery regiments during the Civil War. He cameto Meeker County in 1872 and was editor of one of the earliest newspapers until his death in 1876 at the age of 39. He was one of the first Grand Commanders of the Minnesota G.A.R.

In a glass case below his group of photos are "encampent" medals collected by the G.A.R. and their auxilliaries, the women's Relief Corps, Ladies of the G.A.R. and the Sons of Veterans, at their annual conventions.

Attached to this building is the Meeker County Historical Museum, which was built in 1960. It contains many artifacts from the pioneer days in the county, including an 1868 log cabin.
